I like to call myself a “molecular oceanographer” now, as I’ve got professional training in both biological oceanography and molecular genetics. My research goal is look into water masses to find out what organisms are there and try to understand how they evolve while interact with their surrounding environment. As a population geneticist, I view all the planktonic organisms as a floating pool of genes and resolve their evolutionary history from their DNA fingerprints. I’m going to survey the genetic diversity of krills, copepods, and diatoms in Southern Ocean during this cruise. Any outcomes would be precious.
