My name is Sean Anderson, and I am a first year MS student in Susanne Menden-Deuer’s lab at
the University of Rhode Island, Graduate School of Oceanography. I have a passion for plankton
ecology and am especially interested in the interactions within plankton food webs. I am
fascinated by the behavioral and physiological responses of phytoplankton and their potential
heterotrophic predators. In the past, I have used flow cytometry and molecular approaches to
better understand these complex microbial interactions. I am originally from Maine, so I am used
to cold environments. I am incredibly excited for this cruise and cannot wait to study the
phytoplankton community in Antarctica.
